Blended Approach

A Blended Approach involves the combination of various means of transferring knowledge to a targeted learner community. Typically, this blend includes using a hybrid of traditional in-class delivery and online learning.

More specifically, blended programs can include many combinations of training methods such as the use of e-learning for pre-classroom work, pre- and post-course assessment, as well as post-course instructor-led online coaching sessions.

What constitutes an appropriate Blended Solution? As stated by Felicia Douglis from the Educational Technology Department of San Diego State University:

“A blended solution works when all the instructional components are considered holistically. What is less successful, for instance, are e-learning modules just 'bolted on' to existing instructor-led training”.

Therefore, whatever the mix, it is important that these blended solutions provide two key outcomes:

  • That each component within this blend has a well-defined purpose and has clearly identified learning objectives.
  • That the learning experience be both focused and varied for the learners.
